• Department of Energy GNEP Plans Dangerous Leap Backwards, Citizens Groups Warn

  Plans by the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) to resurrect the reprocessing of spent nuclear reactor fuel represent a dangerous policy leap backward. The plan, called the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP), could involve a reprocessing plant in Illinois.


• NRC Rulemaking on Terror Attacks a Deliberate and Institutionalized Threat to Illinois

  Reversing the policy under which current nuclear reactors were designed, the NRC's new rule on reactor security no longer calls for designs that can withstand the deliberate or accidental impacts from commercial jets. With several reactors just minutes from O'Hare, one of the world's busiest airports, this decision is a clear and present danger to Illinois.

• Hot Weather Overheats Reactors

  The recent heat wave forced several of Exelon's reactors to cut back power output to avoid excessive heat buildup; similar problems have occured in Europe. This just shows that not only can't we "nuke" global warming - we are already reaching a point where reactors are becoming unuseable.

• National Academy of Science Reports on Low Dose Radiation Exposure Should be Final Blow to Industry's
  Self-Proclaimed "Nuclear Renaissance"

  A NAS report affirms that even extremely low doses of ionizing radiation pose a health and cancer risk, and that there is no such thing as safe levels of radiation. This should help spell the doom of the "nuclear renaissance" advocated by energy companies, who have been trying to spin nuclear power as a "green" technology.

• NEIS Demands NRC Release Study Showing Current Waste Policy Unsafe

  NEIS and a coalition of concerned organizations called on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to release a National Academy of Sciences' unclassified report showing that current methods of storing nuclear waste (used fuel pools) are unsafe and at risk from terrorism; the report suggests that other currently existing methods (dry cask storage) be used instead.
  


• Coalition Demands Solution to Terrorism Vulnerability at Nuclear Reactors

  A coalition of national, regional, and local environmental, public interest, and nuclear watchdog organizations petitioned the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to hold emergency enforcement hearings on a significant structural vulnerability to terrorism existing at 32 U.S. commercial nuclear power reactors located in 15 states. • Nuclear Industry Requests $400 Million Subsidy; more ($6 Billion More) to follow

  NuStart Energy Development group asked U.S. taxpayers for $400 million to pay for licence applications on new power plants. They also want $6 Billion to build these plants. No market forces at work here as three companies try forcing taxpayers to buy reactors for them! Caveat Emptor!
